When I go with Central American and Mexican refugees to court, one of the reasons invariably stated by immigration judges — and reasons why these refugees are thus deported — is that they did not report their “crime,” either to the authorities, or to newsworthy outlets. But time and again I know these refugees are afraid, because if they report these crimes against them, either they are killed, or the people who take the report are executed, so most refuse…

    One of the most famous of these cases belongs to Mexican journalist Carmen Aristegui, who saved herself because she made her scandal so public (http://www.latimes.com/world/mexico-americas/la-fg-mexico-journalist-fired-20150316-story.html), that she obliterated the idea she could be “disappeared.”

    But as you can see from your own lists, many journalists are easily dispensed with, in any country…

    It is a sad testament to humanity, that we do not want to hear the truth, or learn from it.
