Academic Freedom and AAUP Events Coming Up

Here are some upcoming 2017 events related to the AAUP and academic freedom:

The AAUP Annual Conference is being held on June 14-17 in Washington DC. Register now: April 15 at midnight EDT is the deadline for early bird rates. Note that during this year’s event, there will also be a special event planned on campus free speech and freedom of the campus press at the Newseum on Wed. June 14, 3-5pm.

April 14 deadline: The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) invites paper proposals for FIRE’s first-ever faculty conference, focusing on issues of American academic freedom, to be held Oct. 5-7 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Authors whose proposals are accepted will receive travel, lodging, and a $3,000 stipend.

April 18, 2pm ET: AAUP Webinar: Shared Governance and Collective Bargaining.

April 22: The AAUP is a partner with the March for Science in Washington DC and at 514 satellite marches around the country. If you’re coming to the March for Science in Chicago, stay to attend part of the Illinois AAUP Annual Meeting a few blocks away.

April 22: Illinois AAUP Annual Meeting, 9:15am-4pm, Columbia College Chicago, featuring Brian Turner, Rima Kapitan, Kira Schuman, and many more. Please RSVP by April 14 for the Illinois AAUP meeting.

April 26: The National Association of Scholars unveils a new report, “Outsourced to China: Confucius Institutes and Soft Power in American Higher Education,” with an event in Washington DC.

April 28-29: New York AAUP annual meeting, NYIT Old Westbury campus.

April 29: Indiana AAUP annual meeting, University of Indianapolis.

April 29: Oregon AAUP annual meeting, Oregon State University.

May 2: Louisiana AAUP annual meeting with Howard Bunsis, LSU-Alexandria.

May 12: Connecticut AAUP annual meeting with Risa Lieberwitz, New Haven, CT.

June 2: Academic Freedom and Society: A one-day conference at the University of Warwick.

June 14-17: AAUP Annual Meeting and Conference.

July 1: call for papers deadline, “Freedom of Speech and Higher Education: The Case of the Academic Boycott of Israel,” conference on 12 September 2017 at Trinity College Dublin.

July 27-30: AAUP Summer Institute in Cincinnati.
