Academic Freedom in an Age of Political Polarization

BY HANK REICHMAN

Yesterday I had the privilege and pleasure of participating in a terrific panel discussion of “Academic Freedom in an Age of Political Polarization” at the Albert Shanker Institute in Washington, D.C.  My fellow panelists were Sigal Ben-Porath, Professor of Education, Political Science and Philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania and author of Free Speech on Campus, and Catherine Ross, Fred C. Stevenson Research Professor at the George Washington University Law School.  Alyssa Picard, director of higher education for the American Federation of Teachers, moderated.  Below is a video of the event.  It is in five parts: Alyssa Picard’s opening remarks; presentations by professor Ben-Porath, me, and professor Ross; and the extensive discussion period.  The entire program ran a bit less than two hours.
