BY THE AAUP
We stand in sorrow and solidarity with Asian and Asian-American communities, who are facing an escalating series of racist attacks, including this week’s horrific attack in Georgia, in which anti-Asian racism compounded with misogyny evidently resulted in the murder of eight people.
Anti-Asian racism has been a recurring theme in United States history. Since early in the COVID-19 pandemic, Asian-Americans across the country have been targeted by people who are motivated by white supremacist beliefs and encouraged by right-wing politicians and media figures to blame people of Asian descent for the virus.
We condemn these attacks and the racist rhetoric that fuels them. As we mourn those who were lost, we also affirm our commitment to becoming a deeply anti-racist organization and working with allies toward a more just society.
The AAUP need not feel it has to comment and might be wise to refrain from commenting on every issue that comes along. The country was not waiting with bated breath to get the AAUP’s pronouncement on this.
I agree, Asian racism is wrong. Asian racism has been around for along time but has been normalized. Though Covid-19 came from China, There’s no reason to hate them for that. Don’t act like we’re the only ones suffering, Every country including asia has dealt with the tragic loses of they’re family and friends. So why make the situation worse, Is racism gonna stop the pandemic?! Is it gonna bring back the people we lost?! How does it make anything better? Rather than blaming it on people, Do something about saving people and helping this pandemic rather than hatting and killing them. Thank you…
