Assault on the US Capitol

BY THE AAUP

US Capitol at duskThe AAUP is appalled by the assault on the US Capitol today. The current administration’s attacks on truth, inflammatory rhetoric, and baseless objections to the result of a free and fair election have now led to violence, highlighting the precarious state of our democracy. We look forward to working with the new administration, Senate, and House to strengthen our democracy and to strengthen our education system, a key underpinning of a functional democracy.

  1. Did the AAUP take a stand against all the “peaceful” protests throughout the nation in 2020? If so, I’d like to see those statements, complete with the dates and signatories.

Those who destroyed government buildings and businesses, looted and rampaged, and even killed and wounded many people were just as aggrieved by (perceived and actual) police brutality as those who attached the Capitol Building were upset by the presidential election results, yet Joe Biden and Democrats (and probably the AAUP) did not condemn any of the BLM and Antifa violence, even at the DNC Convention, until the polls indicated that the public did not like rioting, even in a just cause.

Don’t get me wrong. I am a declared Marxist and but do not support violence and destruction — on the right, left, or center. I hope for a peaceful Gandhian revolution. But I am opposed to hypocrisy and the ignoring (or encouragement) of violence by one side and not the other is a classic case of hypocrisy, in my opinion.

  2. Was the AAUP as “appalled” by the BLM and Antifa riots over the Summer? Arson, destruction of businesses and real estate; police attacks (police in Portland even trapped inside and threatened, according to Portland’s mayor, with murder); looting, gunfire, vandalism, beatings, massive public and private property destruction of over $10 Billion dollars (CNN said Minneapolis looked like a nuclear bomb went off), and not one word from the AAUP.

    • Matt Anderson: The cliche IS true: “Great minds DO think alike”! And within 6 minutes of each other. 🙂
