A Very Uneven Playing Field

BY MARTIN KICH

If you need further evidence of the fantasy being chased by the 65 universities in the Football Bowl Subdivision but not in the Power 5 Conferences—that is by half of the FBS programs—take a look at the following chart:

2016-top-300-football-recruits

The top ten programs on this year’s list signed 148 of the top 300 high school prospects in the country. Four of the programs are in the SEC, two in the Big 10, two in the ACC, and one each in the Big 12 and the PAC 12.

Only 23 programs signed at least five of the top 300 recruits. That means that 41 of the 65 programs in the Power 5 conferences (plus Notre Dame) signed fewer than five.

Moreover, the top 22 programs on the list signed 93 of the Top 100 recruits; so the other 108 programs in the FBS signed only seven of the Top 100 recruits.
