OCAAUP 2018 Annual Meeting Resolution 3: Instruction First

BY MARTIN KICH

This resolution was passed unanimously by the chapter leaders and members attending this year’s annual meeting in the Columbus suburb of Westerville.

Whereas the primary mission of Ohio’s colleges and universities is to educate students, a mission carried out by professors,

Whereas more than 90 percent of Ohio AAUP members belong to a collective bargaining unit,

Whereas colleges and universities have increasingly and irresponsibly devoted resources to endeavors peripheral to the academic mission despite the fact that enrollment has increased at many Ohio institutions,

Whereas the aforementioned misplaced priorities have led to a reduction in instructional spending and the number of full-time and tenured faculty, which has placed unnecessary stresses on collective bargaining negotiations between administrations and faculty,

Be it resolved that the Ohio Conference AAUP encourages Ohio’s colleges and universities to adopt an “Instruction First” approach to budgeting to ensure that high-quality instruction for students can be guaranteed before allocations are made to enterprises and activities clearly outside of our institutions’ core missions,

Be it further resolved that the Ohio Conference AAUP calls on college and university administrations always to bargain in good faith.
