The CARES Act, or the third federal stimulus bill in response to the Coronavirus pandemic, includes funding for post-secondary educational institutions (vocational schools, community and technical colleges, and other colleges and universities.

  2. How is this money to be distributed within a university? They have already collected tuition for this semester. Does this require or support the retention of faculty or staff? Will this be spent for bonuses for administrators?

  3. Craig Campbell those are key questions! You’re (understandably) wondering about extra bonuses for administrators. Some on my campus wondered if the money would go to the athletics division. Hopefully there will be guidelines for using the money that strictly require adherence to the academic mission of the university. It’s sad, and perhaps a revealing sign of the times in higher ed, that many of us are imagining corrupt uses of the money.

    • Many of our higher ed institutions operate like corporations seeking maximum profit. They want part- time faculty with no benefits Who they can shed with the next fad and no say about the curriculum and programs. Students become customers who they want to please so they can get their money.
